Netley shore

The following is an extract from Damson jam http://gentledove2.wordpress.com/damson-jam
Damson jam

Damson jam

Moonlight shadow, moonlight shadow

I don’t want to be mantled with you

cold and unfriendly as you are,

chilled with the midnight dew.

I want to have a sunbeam

clothed upon my shoulder

little sis will hide her face

unless loving arms enfold her.

We were sitting on a towel

down on Netley shore

eating bread and damson jam

harking the old men snore.

Sifting through the shingle

in the afternoon sun

a stone that’s got a hole in it,

little sis says,” is a lucky one.”

No-one says the sea is boring

not the sailor, how would he?

who has spent his whole life

traversing Ol’ Briny.

Freshing white, the breakers foam,

crested billow curl,

waves, wave upon wave

beneath sky of blue or pearl.

  1. I absolutely love this — it is such a joy to read –the stone with the hole in it, the sunbeams the sea — and of course the Damson Jam –

cheers, cheers and more happy cheers ….

  2. Ooh Hello Barbara, it’s a beautiful sunny day in England, after a week of cold and grey, The title came first with this one [all poems come differently] and it is fun looking for lucky stones at Netley with children, when the tide is going out you never know what might be lurking under the stones. Umm I can smell the seaweed-roll on summer! :) and it’s lovely to see you.

  3. Merry and Happy Christmas to you and family —blessings

  4. And blessing to you dear Barbara.

  6. Hey gmarie, nice to meet, I wish you a happy and prosperous new year. :)

  7. I’ve put up a poetry site of sorts recently and I’m adding you on. This was such a nice find!
Can you recommend something that’s touched you of late?
It snowed last night on Mauna Kea (I’m from the Big Island)…we were out looking from the road through periodic cloud cover- I’m close to the coast…windward side. Anyway, I hope you have a Blessed New Year as well. gmarie-

They is a kind of plum Walt, oval in shape and of the colour depicted above. :)

  17. I would imagine it is very tasty jam indeed. I very much love your art work, for me it captures all the lost innocence of my ancient childhood.
May you always be a free spirit my friend, and never a slave to conventionality.

  18. You mean they are scribbles, they are really, my defence for them is the same as for my poetry, they present you with an immediate flash of the inspirational idea behind them but there is lacking somewhat in technical ability. I can see it by looking at other people’s work. Never-the-less I think the inspiration is 1st class [mostly] and that’s what counts most.
