- The Merry Endeavour
*
Eyes above the transom
stood upon her chair
looking out over the garden
where just last night, she is sure,
were pixies and fairies bright.
Over there, elves took counsel with Oberon.
Now pixies are buttercups, fairies daisies,
and where the elf king had sat, a dandelion.
Dandelion, dandy, lion!
startled she hears a roar,
she jumps down with a cry of alarm
“Mummy help! there is a lion outside the door.”
I told a guy I’d found treasure,
he said I should keep on searching.
Surely stones which in London are comely
will be precious too in Nanking.
If you like your furniture
there is no need to change,
if it suits the way it is
why would you re-arrange?

Remember July, our bicycle ride
through Chiswick down to Putney.
The Whacked Weasel for lunch, supping their punch
we had bangers with mango chutney. (coo hoo)
*
On the occe, you got cocky
I beat you by doubling out.
*
And on the way back we made our tongues black
chewing chicory liquorice sticks.
Weaving red buses, in spite of the cusses
we showed them our country tricks.

Nobody ever asked me
what the name of a river should be,
I would have said it should be called
after a thing costly, but which is free.
It shall be known as the River Peace
flowing in from the ocean of calm,
Serenity would form it’s tributaries
together with Quietude and Balm.
Running alongside, the path of joy
adjoining the road to prosperity
near fields of happiness and delight
all decked with pentstemon and lily.
“Ah! what will you do with the swamp?
for there is bound to be one there.”
“Why! build a yellow bridge to span it
and call it the Merry Endeavour.”
“But what about the hill, the hill?
steep and treacherous” you cry,
“climb it, climb it , at whatever the cost.”
It will be worth it in the bye.
